alta-vada:

Lately I’ve been hearing a lot about “otherkin” and “cross-species identity” and whatnot and I thought to myself: “What the fuck?”

[Here’s the Wikipedia article on otherkin]

So I did some research on it and instantly I doubted its legitimacy. It’s obvious to me that it’s a product of the internet. The word “otherkin” was coined sometime during the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and the whole  concept of cross-species “identity” which “otherkin” describes dates to roughly the same time.

This is factually untrue. It’s true that the word “otherkin” was coined in the 1990s, but the history of the community can be documented back into the 1970s.
