“I’m a dragon,”
declares a man at the next table over -
my head turns,
my heart quickens,
my breath sticks in my throat.
“Looks like I’m a monkey,”
one of his companions adds,
and then I remember
the placemats
depicting all twelve animals
of the Chinese zodiac,
each with a list of years.
My breath returns,
and once more
I am alone.

if anyone can maybe direct me to a forum or something where i can talk to sensible people without worrying constantly about trolls, that would be excellent and much appreciated.
being ‘kin on tumblr is not at all good for my health.
Forums and mailing lists mixed here:
Otherkin Alliance
Otherkin Phenomena
Embracing Mystery
Otherkin Community
I do not know much about specifically dragon resources these days, but Draconic, RealDragon, TrueWyrm
Elven Realities and Elfinkind Digest are both run by elves but take all kinds (the latter is where the term “otherkin” was originally coined).
eta: I do not recommend otherkin.com.
Has anyone out there following me read this? The description sounds kind of interesting:
Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.
Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion.

“If you don’t believe in dragons,
It is curiously true
That the dragons you disparage
Choose to not believe in you.”— Jack Prelutsky. “If You Don’t Believe In Dragons”. The Dragons Are Singing Tonight. (via drakophilia)
Some more of this - not sure where it fits in:
Once they all believed in dragons
When the world was fresh and young,
We were woven into legends,
Tales were told and songs were sung;
We were treated with obeisance,
We were honored, we were feared;
Then one day they stopped believing –
On that day, we disappeared.
Now they say our time is over,
Now they say we’ve lived our last;
Now we’re treated with derision
Where we once ruled unsurpassed.
We must make them all remember,
In some way we must reveal
That our spirit lives forever –
We are dragons! We are real!

I feel like my dragonself wouldn’t actually be able to breathe fire but instead wind up breathing concentrated blasts of air. o: I dunno, I like associating myself with the air element and it kinda works I could be an air-powered desert dragon that’d work
it’d be amusing if they thought they could breathe fire all their life and just
PAH
BOOM
SAND FLIES EVERYWHERE DUE TO A MASSIVE WAVE OF AIR PUNCHING THE DESERT
DRAGON JUST SITS THERE SADLY
WITH SAND IN THEIR EYES
GOOD JOB DRAGON
While I have met dragons that breathe fire… really the whole “breath weapon” thing I think is a little D&D-ish. Nor is it necessary to have an elemental association. Not to say that it’s not possible that “air dragon” might turn out to be a perfectly good description of you, but just to point out that in fact the idea of “breathing” anything (in the sense meant here) as well as association with a specific element might actually not be relevant at all. None of the dragons I remember being fit that kind of paradigm, and I’ve known a number of others who didn’t either.
(Boy I hope I don’t regret doing this. lol.)
I organize a gathering for elven, faery, changeling, sidhe, and other sorts of magical/majikal* kindreds and otherkin here in California, called MythiCalia. We have workshops and discussions, sometimes do ritual and energy-work, and also just do the things you might on any camping trip, like sing around the fire, play games, or walk in the woods.
All kinds are welcome, including the “fey-touched” or “elf-friends” who are not themselves otherkin, so long as they jibe with that mythic spirit. However, those who are strictly non-magical animal-kin/therians should be aware that the gather is not really geared to their experiences and interests - we’re not a big enough event (so far, anyway) to cater to all kinds with different “tracks”. (This is not a convention like a furry con or whatnot.)
The site this year is tent-camping only and is in the SF Bay area. The official dates are Friday-Sunday, Sept. 28-30, but there is an option to come on Thursday the 27th by separate arrangement with the park. Registration fee is $45 per person until August 15th and will go up to $55 per person thereafter. This fee does not include any meals.
For full details, to join the mailing list, register, etc., see the website: http://mythicalia.eristic.net.

* - An affected, perhaps pretentious spelling, to be sure. But to me it has a feeling of the weirdness, mystery, mythicalness, glamour that is peculiar to this sort of folk, and it’s one I’ve been using for a long time in this context. Probably picked it up from sade wolfkitten, what with her Temple ov Psychick Youth spelling habits.
Your Next-Door Neighbor Is A Dragon

This one was pretty terrible. The author interviewed a number of people for this and apparently picked the worst of the lot for sensationalism. Only to be expected, I suppose, from SomethingAwful.com - although since the whole point of the book is “hey look at the weirdos” it wasn’t likely to be sympathetic no matter who was associated with it.
This was only one chapter of the book, btw - most of the book is about other things.
Yesterday, I got my first glimpse since my Awakening into my past life (or one of my past lives). On a roller coaster, on the last big drop, I suddenly got vivid memories of propelling myself off a tall, snowy slope and flying down. Since then, these types of memories have been triggering randomly when the wind gets strong. They’ve all been beautiful but seem without a point or lesson.
I identify as Dragonkin, but as a believer in evolution, I don’t really think dragons ever existed as a species on Earth. I’ve always thought of them as some spirit equivalent. Maybe manifestations of energy. I’m not really sure how this spirit world would overlap with Earth, however. Could these memories possibly be real? They were definitely flight memories, and in a big body, not like a bird or something.
I’m stumped. Any other ‘Kin got ideas?
They could be not on Earth. Plenty of planets out there.
They could be in a non-physical spirit realm of some type (along with your idea of dragons only existing in spirit), Earth’s otherworld, or a place like Faerie.
LET’S GET SOME DISCUSSION UP IN HERE.
HOW DID YOU FIGURE OUT YOUR KINTYPE? DID YOU JUST RESEARCH IT AND IT CLICKED, LIKE ME? DID A CERTAIN EVENT CHANGE YOUR LIFE? I WANNA KNOW.
Hmmm, I guess kinda like that. There really wasn’t much research involved, to tell you the truth. When the idea was broken to me that there were folks out there for whom this was really real it was just kind of like oh well obviously I’m a faery happened in my head, and it seemed like the right thing and bam.
I don’t want to say “and I never questioned it”, because that’s not true - I’ve doubted it a lot. But as far as type, I never really needed to look around… faery was obvious at first, or, well, kinda. Sidhe was one of the earliest words I used for myself; and then I stopped using it for a long time because ca the late 90s it seemed like everyone who used “sidhe” was Tuatha De Danann, and I’m not, so I thought “well, guess I’m wrong, can’t be sidhe then”. It was not until much more recently, I’d say 2007, that I had some spirit/vision experiences at an otherkin gather that led me to … hm, I’ll say give myself permission to call myself “sidhe.”
(Aside: faery and sidhe are not interchangeable terms; generally I think of sidhe as one possible kind of faery, but there are some sidhe who do not call themselves faery and consider themselves something kinda different. I use both for myself because at this point I am not sure if one or the other is more accurate, or if I am a hybrid, or what.)
It was not very long after that (mid 1998) that some dragon memories started surfacing. I went through a period where I identified primarily as dragon (what I called a stardragon which is kind of a celestial thing, although there were also memories in there of a couple more physical dragon types), which change was partly influenced by the aforementioned “oh, guess I can’t be sidhe then”. I think, funnily enough, that the faery/sidhe images have only been kinda-concretely (not really very concretely, but compared to “nothing at all”) emerging in my head during the past … eh, six or seven years? (Really not sure; by this point it kinda all blurs together. I have not kept meticulous journals or anything like that.)
So I guess it amounts to “I didn’t go looking for a particular type, that’s just what was there in the memory-pictures and my instinctual urges.” The main triggering event was finding the wyldefae list on, uh, I guess it was Onelist at the time? anyway one of the email list services that Yahoo! subsequently swallowed up, although there were some threads prior to that.
